Research Support Division  organized a talk titled  Enhancing Academic Reputation With New Social Media on 6th June 2011 at IlQam, UiTM Shah Alam. A total of 43 participants have attended the one hour talk.
The speaker, Prof. Casey Chan from YLL School of Medicine delivered an interesting talk and have received many feedbacks.  Let's hope that the participants will use the social media and have their research writing enhanced.

Learning objectives:
At the end of this workshop you should be able to: 

·Set up an academic blog focused on your research interest and public outreach 
·Learn how to use Twitter and Facebook to increase your post- publication publicity 
·Create discussion groups on Facebook 
·Use WizFolio to share references with your colleagues and the public 
·Use WizFolio to upload your publications to the Internet.

Synopsis:

Social media has expanded beyond personal connectivity into mainstream branding and customer outreach for all the major consumer brands. Its impact on political change is self-evident. Partly due to unfamiliarity and partly due to the association of social media with disrepute academics have been slow to embrace this medium.

In this talk, the role of social media in academic reputation will be discussed. For academics, social media is a new media is a new way to rapidly disseminate their research work and enhance their online presence. The use of the new media has to be carefully managed to avoid pitfalls.

In this workshop, tips will be given on how to utilize conventional social networking platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to integrate with the new generation of reference managers. In addition to discussions on CiteULike, Mendeley and Zotero, Prof Chan will demonstrate the use of Wizfolio to create an online presence by coupling with the new media. 

About the Speaker:

Casey Chan is an adjunct professor at the YLL School of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering at the National University of Singapore. He is active in teaching and research in both faculties, and regularly mentors the younger academic staff and graduate students on their career development.

WizFolio, the journal reference management software he has developed, is widely used by undergraduate and graduate students for their final year projects and graduate theses. Prof Chan has led the effort to integrate WizFolio with resources from Scholarly Portal, a consortium of 21 university libraries in Canada.

SCOPUS, ISI and ENDNOTES X3 @ PTAR 2

On 27/1/2011, JPSP held a workshop on the use of Scopus, ISI and EndNotes X3 in PTAR 2 from 9.30 to 11.30 in the morning. The talks were delivered by  Mr. Shahrol Nizam and Ms Siti Rohayu, librarian from JPSP. Dr. Jaafar from MITRANS and his post graduate students attended the session. Librarian from PTAR 2, Mrs. Hani Liza and Ms. Nik Amanina,  were also in the class facilitating the sessions.

The talk started with Ms. Rohayu on how to use Scopus followed by Mr. Shahrol Nizam on Thomson ISI, and how to use EndNote X3 properly.

On overall, students are satisfied with the the contents of the talk and are asking for similar classes in the future. Thank you

Report ISI Thomson Reuters Talk

BACKGROUND

Talk on the ISI by Thomson Reuters had been organized by RMI and cooperated with PTAR as a host. The purposes of program are to provide opportunities for participants to learn about ISI Web of Knowledge Online Database, which was subscribed by PTAR. Through this program, participants had learned about the use of "smart discovery", "ISI Journal Selection Process", Journal Citation report, EndNotes and Researcher ID.

"To improve the quality of journals, articles and research In Malaysia. With the explosion of available information (truthful u / validated and false / non-validated types), it is Important to retrieve what is relevant and useful. "

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN:

• There are 42 participants involved in program.
• This program was attended by, the University Research Committees, post-graduate students, and PTAR librarians.
• Opening speech by Prof Madya Dr Hjh Razidah Ismail from the Institute of Management Research (RMI)
• Then, the program continued with a briefing by the ISI Web of Knowledge by En.Lim Khee Hiang.
• In the evening, there were hands on ISI Web of Knowledge and the Journal Citation Report by En.Lim Khee Hiang and assist by Rajdev Narayanasamy.

COMMENTS & SUGGESTIONS:

1. Delivery services for if the books available for example, PTAR 3 - PTAR 1 

2. More guidance on how to use the EndNotes.

3. Increase the time for "Hands On"

CONCLUTION

The program has been carried out properly. In the presence of 42 participants were to some extent to achieve the objective of this program focuses on the use of the database ISI Web of Knowledge. This program also provides exposure to participants on ISI Thomson especially EndNotes and Researcher ID specifically.

Bertempat di Dewan Seminar Perdana Aras 3 , Bangunan Pentadbiran UiTM Penang, taklimat “ Supporting Research in an Impact factor Environment” telah diaturkan oleh Ketua Perpustakaan UiTM Penang, Puan Norhayati dengan bantuan staf perpustakaan . Seramai 55 peserta telah mengikuti program ini yang terdiri daripada kalangan pensyarah-pensyarah muda.

Seminar berlangsung pada jam 10.30 pagi dan berakhir pada 1.10 petang dengan selingan slot oleh pihak GARTNER yang menerangkan tentang produk dan apa yang mereka boleh tawarkan untuk para penyelidik. Ceramah yang disampaikan oleh Pn. Khasiah Zakaria menerangkan tentang pentingnya RU ( Research University) dan Jabatan Pengurusan Sokongan Penyelidikan ini sebagai hub untuk menjayakan RU itu.

Penyampaian juga menyentuh tentang betapa pentingnya para pensyarah:

1. menulis jurnal artikel dan diterbitkan sebanyak yang mungkin untuk dapat di masukkan di dalam SCOPUS dan ISI supaya dapat di index oleh dua (2) pengkalan data ini.

2. menulis buku dan diterbitkan oleh UPENA serta mempunyai Indeks belakang Buku (IBB) – keranan buku yang tiada Indeks belakang buku tidak dikira sebagai buku berkualiti berwasit atau “scholarly books” malah Indeks belakang buku dapat meningkatkan nilai buku itu kerana pembaca boleh terus mencari kata kunci menggunakan Indeks Belakang Buku(IBB) . Elemen ini IBB juga meningkatkan buku ini diindeks oleh AMAZON.com dan melalui Amazon.com buku ini boleh dijual di serata dunia.

3. Selain itu, taklimat ini menyedarkan peri pentingnya menggunakan perpustakaan sekiranya ingin mencari maklumat . Pihak perpustakaan sebntiasa bersedia membantu.

4. Pihak Pensyarah juga dimaklumkan agar meningkatkan jaringan ataupun “networking” dengan rakan dari berbagai negara dari berbagai benua. Penceramah mencadangkan agar pensyarah yang dapat menghadiri persidangan antarabangsa mengedarkan ‘business card ‘ sebanayak mungkin dan disamping itu bertukar kad dan idea dengan rakan dari berbagai negara. Seterusnya, sekembalinya mereka ke Malaysia mereka perlu terus berhubung dan mungkin perlu menjemput mereka untuk menjadi penulis jurnal terbitan UiTM atau menjadi rakan penulis atau sidang editor.

Penceramah berharap agar kerjasama antara perpustakaan dan pensyarah dapat terus ditingkatkan dan seterusnya membantu UiTM menjadi Universiti Penyelidikan.

Diakhir sesi, sedikit cenderamata disampaikan oleh pihak UiTM Penang iaitu Puan Norhayati lepada Puan Khasiah tanda kenang-kenangan dan juga pihak GARTNER kepada UiTM Penang.
